1. How long will CrashPlan retain my deleted files?
It depends on which version of CrashPlan you have. With CrashPlan Essential it’s a 30-day deleted file retention. CrashPlan Professional is 90 days. And the CrashPlan Enterprise package is unlimited.
2. How many versions of my data will CrashPlan keep?
You choose how many versions of your data to keep, and how far back in time to go. We don’t place any limits on versioning.
3. How do you charge for data?
We only charge for the data that's actually stored in the cloud. And once it’s compressed, it will be a lot less than what’s on your computer(s). Versions are stored (see above question), but not the full data of each version – just the incremental data that’s different from previous versions – which keeps your data from ballooning. 4. What is the difference between CrashPlan and cloud collaboration tools (CCTs) such as OneDrive, Google Drive, etc?
With CCTs, you are working from one static version of a file that may or may not have edit history. CCTs have no true versioning and no deleted retention. That means that someone could make an irreversible edit or a file could accidentally get deleted – and it’s gone forever. With CrashPlan, all of your data is backed up, all the time, ensuring fast and reliable recovery – and removing the chance of human error. 5. Can I try CrashPlan before I buy?
Yes! We offer free 14-day trials of all our packages so you can get started right away. And it's easy to add additional users or upgrade to another package later on. No need to restart your backups.
6. I understand that my data backs up to the cloud, but where exactly is it stored?
Your data is backed up to one of CrashPlan's 6 proprietary data centers around the globe, including the United States, Dublin, Amsterdam, Singapore, and Sydney. By default, most backups are stored in the United States. You can request a different data center by contacting our support team.
7. Why do you own your own data centers?
Running our own data centers offers numerous benefits to our customers. Every decision that goes into the creation and maintenance of our data centers is designed to give you the best possible experience while passing cost-savings to you. We're able to control every aspect of data security, redundancy, and efficiency – and we never throttle your bandwidth. We're also implementing measures to lessen our impact on the environment; for example, our Seattle data center is hydro-powered.
